Monkeypox is a rare disease that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. As of 29 August 2022, there have been 61 cases of monkeypox recorded in Victoria. The department conducts active monitoring of cases and contacts to prevent further spread in the community. Local transmission is occurring in Australia, and anyone developing symptoms that may be consistent with monkeypox should seek medical care.
